It has come to my attention that crack is whack or crack is wack, and the first question that comes to mind is: what does that even mean? In order to sum up a reasonable definition, it would be best to define each word of the phrase in the context of 1986, when Keith Haring debuted the mural, “Crack Is Wack”.
We all know that crack, or the crack cocaine, as the kids’ parents call it, is a free base form of cocaine that can be smoked. It is a much cheaper alternative to the luxurious cocaine. The high of the crack cocaine is intense but brief, making it highly addictive. The usage of the crack cocaine was widespread in the poorest urban neighborhoods. So much so, it was labeled the “crack epidemic” or the “crack cocaine epidemic”. 1986 was nothing short of turbulent with Lionel Richie, Mr. Mister, and Whitney Houston fighting tooth and nail for the number one spot on the Billboard® chart. All this, without once mentioning the heart-wrenching break-up of power-duo Wham.
Is is a passive verb for the present tense third person singular.
Wack is probably short for wacky. In the case of whack, there are many interpretations. One definition of whack is the verb whence a mobster kills someone. Another is, the adjective for outrageous extravagance. For example, “Robin Leach gave us a peek into Madonna’s posh mansion, and it was totally whack, but when he showed us Michael Jackson’s ranch, it was whack whack!”
When we put it all together, Crack is wack, or crack is whack, is ultimately a confusing anti-drug campaign created by an out of touch government and a glory-seeking graffiti artist.
We now return to the story, already in progress.
Jeb lowered his large dark sunglasses to reveal moist teary eyes proving once again that he was one with empathy. He stuttered between sobs, “That’s why I can’t talk that way anymore.”
Fiona swooned, nearly fainting. The truth made her melt. Somehow, she found the strength to lunge forward and hug Jeb, squeezing him as hard as she could. Bones creaked and cracked upon the embrace. “I still love you, you big galoot.”
They held each other for nearly two hours, until the sun came up. He gently rubbed his hand over her pregnant belly.
